LocalMaps Gallery Basics

titleHow do I open a map?

Visit the LocalMaps Gallery to view the maps and content which has been made available to you. Filter the gallery’s content by clicking on the categories located on the left hand side of the page. To open a map, click on the thumbnail of interest, or one of the featured maps at the top of the page.

titleHow do I log in to LocalMaps?

To log in to LocalMaps, click the Log In button at the top right corner of the website. Upon clicking the button, you are greeted with several options, depending on what your LocalMaps administrator has configured. These include using an ArcGIS Online or Enterprise user, or a social login, such as Facebook or Google.

titleHow do I favourite a map?

If you wish to save a map as a favourite, you must first log in to LocalMaps using either an ArcGIS, Facebook or Google user, and click the star icon located at the top right corner of a content card. To view your favourites, visit the LocalMaps Gallery, log in and click the My Favourite Maps category on the left hand side.

Using your mouse or touchpad, left click on the map and hold your finger down while navigating left/right/up/down.

If you are using a mouse, use the scroll wheel to scroll up to zoom in and scroll down to zoom out. If you are using a touchpad, use the +/- extent buttons located at the top left of the map, or alternatively, use a pinch in and out gesture.

To zoom to a specific feature, click on the feature within the map and click “zoom to” within the pop-up.

To find your current position within the map, click on the cross-hairs icon located on the lefthand side of the map. The map will then pan you to your location and indicate this by a blue point. Please note: If you are asked for permission to access your location, please click allow.

To find a legend for the map, click on the Legend Widget. The legend widget displays a sample of the feature symbology, paired with the name of the feature.

titleHow do I turn a layer on or off?

To turn a layer on, click on the Layers Widget and click the empty white box beside the layer name. To turn a layer off, click on the blue arrow box. Please note: If a sub-layer is not visible within the map, please ensure the parent layer is also turned on.

To find a specific layer to turn on or off, click on the Layers List Widget. Click the search (magnifying glass) button to find layers.

titleHow do I zoom to a specific layer?

To zoom to a specific layer, click on the Layers Widget. Click on the ellipsis next to the layer you are interested in and select “Zoom to”. This will zoom you to the max extent for the layer.

To change the basemap, click on the Basemap Widget. Select another basemap from the gallery. The map will then refresh and maintain your set extent but with a new basemap showing.

titleHow do I query a map?

To query the map, either use the Search Bar in the top left of the map view. Depending on how the LocalMaps administrator has configured this, you may have one or a selection of searches to query against. Simply enter a search term and hit enter or the search button. Suggested results should be presented back to you.

Alternatively, you can use the Select by Attribute option available in the Select tool dropdown. Here, you can build an expression against features in the map to filter down what results are returned in the map view.

titleHow do I view the attribute table for a layer?

There are a few ways to view the attribute table for a layer in the map. You can simply click the small upwards arrow at the bottom of the map (in the middle of the screen). This will present the attribute table will all layers you can click through. Alternatively if you open the Layers List widget then click on the ellipsis next to the layer you are interested in, you will have the option to View in Attribute Table too.

titleHow do I select multiple features on a map?

By using the Select Tool. You can select multiple features by first selecting a selection tool, then either dragging the pointer on the map to create a new selection or by pressing the Shift key while dragging the pointer on the map to add selected features to the selection. To remove features from your selection, simply Press the Ctrl key while dragging the pointer on the map.

titleHow do I view the source of a layer?

To view the source or metadata for a layer, click on the Layers List Widget. Click on the ellipsis next to the layer you are interested in. Go to Show Item details, this will open a new tab with the service details.

titleHow do I search for a property or service?

If a search has been configured for the map, there will be a search box in the top left of the map view. Depending on what searches have been set up, you should be able to enter a property address and click on a suggested result. The map will them zoom to the location and highlight the feature on the map. If you do not see any search options available then contact the LocalMaps Site administrator to set some up.

titleHow do I draw on a map?

To add a graphic to the map, click on the Draw / Measure Widget. Select a draw tool from the options. If you wish to add multiple drawings of using the same tool, tick on Continuous drawing. If not, leave unticked. Optionally select any measurements you would like to include with your drawing when added to the map. Choose the appearance you wish your drawing to have. Click on the map and drag to add a drawing.

After your graphic is complete, the Draw / Measure widget panel will collapse to show the Drawings section. Here, tick the drawings you wish to export, choose their export format (GeoJSON, GPX or KMZ) and hit Export.

To measure a feature on the map, click on the Draw / Measure Widget. After selecting your draw tool, you will be presented with the appropriate measurement options to select from. Define these and then a graphic to the map. Measurements will be presented when completed (or if drawing with Segment Lengths selected, these will update dynamically on the map as you draw).

To print a map, click on the Print Widget. A Print preview window will appear. Select your desired Layout and Format. Additionally you can choose to preserve the map scale or use map extent as well as force the scale if you need. Click Print to generate the print.

To share a map, click on the Share Widget. Here, you can either copy the link for the map, select additional link options or copy the txt to embed this app in a website.

Reports are generated by clicking on a feature and then (if a report has been configured for that layer), clicking on the Report icon in the popup. You will then be presented with a small dialogue window to select which report to run. The time to generate will differ depending on the complexity of the report chosen.

titleHow do I find the coordinates of a point?

To find co-ordinates of a point, click on the Zoom to Point Widget. Click on the map. A yellow point will be added and the co-ordinates of this feature will appear in the panel. Choose another co-ordinate system from the drop-down to convert your co-ordinates.

To create a bookmark for your current session, click on the Bookmark Widget. Click one of the bookmark thumbnails to set the map extent to the bookmark area.

titleHow do I save a map to be used for later?

To save a map, you need to first create (or use an existing) login for LocalMaps. LocalMaps supports the following login types: ArcGIS Login, Facebook and Google.

  • If you intend to use an ArcGIS Login, this must be a login to the ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise Organisation that controls the LocalMaps site. This will be provided to you.

  • Facebook logins can be created by clicking the Facebook option under the Login button

  • Google logins can be created by clicking the Google option under the login button

Once you know you are logged into LocalMaps, when you view a map you can use the Save tool. Click this to save the map you are looking at. In saving this, you will also be saving the following:

  • Map extent

  • Map graphics

  • Any layers turned on or off in the underlying webmap

The following are those not saved:

  • Switching to a different basemap

  • Changing Layer transparency

  • Layer visibility

  • Additional layers added via the add data widget

To access a saved map at a later date, simply go to the LocalMaps Gallery, login and click the “My Saved Maps” category on the side menu.

titleHow do I switch to a different map?

To switch to a different map (while maintaining your same map extent), click on the Switch Map widget. Choose a map from the list to change to.

titleI have users that want to upload KMZ in NZTM or other projections. The Add Data tool is not allowing me to do this.

This is the OGC standard, KMZ is only supported in WGS84. The recommended workflow is to use WGS84 KMZ files.

Advanced Functionality

titleHow do I export my selected feature?

Once you have draw a selection, click the ellipsis (…) to open the Selection Actions drop-down menu. Here you can clickClick Export to CSV file. A CSV file is generated locally for the feature set. Alternatively, if you choose to view the results in the attribute table first, you can click the options button and select Export selected to CSV.

titleHow do I make a selection using a buffer?

When you open the select tool, you will see a Enable Buffer Option checkbox. Choose your preferred selection method from the dropdown and then check this option. You will see options appear in which you can enter the desired buffer distance, units and whether to show the buffer on the map. After these are entered, simply select features to have the buffer applied.

titleHow do I embed a LocalMaps map in my website?

Click on the Share widget and you will see an option to Embed this app in a website. This gives the code to use in the web page so the LocalMaps Viewer can be embedded inside.

titleHow do I convert my coordinates to a different coordinate system?

You can use the Zoom to Point widget for this. Simply enter your co-ordinates in the appropriate co-ordinate system boxes. To convert them, just select another option from the drop down. The coordinates will update to reflect the new system.

titleWhy can I not see a particular widget in the map viewer?

The LocalMaps Site administrator may not have enabled that tool for that map. Suggest contacting them to see if it can get enabled.

This is mostly likely due to the basemaps missing not being in the same map projection as the map you re viewing.

titleWhy is my added data not saved?

The save widget does not support saving on additional layers you add to the map via the Add Data widget. The following are supported by the tool:

  • Map extent

  • Map graphics

  • Any layers turned on or off in the underlying webmap

The following are those not saved:

  • Switching to a different basemap

  • Changing Layer transparency

  • Layer visibility

  • Additional layers added via the add data widget

Troubleshooting

titleMultiple Selections or Removals (using Shift or Ctrl) do not work as expected

There was a bug in early release of 2.3 that meant that users could not make multiple selections (e.g. opening select tool, making a selection then holding down the shift key to add other features to their selection) or remove features from a selection (e.g. selecting multiple features and then holding down ctrl key to click on a remove certain features from the selection). This has been resolved in the LocalMaps 2.3.1 Quality Patch.
